Haiti was the first nation to recognize Greece's independence in 1822. This historic act of solidarity was rooted in Haiti's own experience with revolution against colonial rule and was supported by Haitian President Jean-Pierre Boyer. In a symbolic gesture, Haiti also sent 25 tons of coffee to Greece, which was meant to be sold to help fund the Greek fight for independence
